Anacortes ...more than a ferry connection

We have not had many regrets on our trip but we do regret making Anacortes a stop- over to catch the ferry to San Jaun Islands instead of a destination. We were only there for one night but we loved the limited time we had there!
Cottage by the Sea
The cottage we stayed in had beautiful views and we were able to enjoy a lovely dinner of local seafood and enjoy the tranquil scenery and lovely sunset.
The Mural Project
Anacortes launched an effort to revitalize its downtown that included the creation of murals by their native artist, Bill Mitchell. Mitchell was left paralyzed from the waist down from a car accident in his teens. Despite this handicap, he was able to transform a small Main Street grass roots effort into a legacy for him and the town.

The murals depict historical events and local personalities that were created over 35 years! The town has created a tour for the 150 murals. Rusty and I had fun just driving around down town and having the murals "jump out" at us instead of us hunting them down. We wish we could have seen each one. ( If we ever have the good fortune to return to Anacortes we will!)
Washington State Ferry
We caught the ferry the next morning as drive on passengers. While we were waiting - we spied 2 more Bill Mitchell murals and caught a great view of Mount Baker!

We had heard a bit of negative press about the ferry runs recently- but we were so impressed with how smoothly everything ran, and how friendly and helpful their entire staff was. We had plenty of room to distance, masks were required and it was fun to be out on the deck for a few minutes. It was a very comfortable ride!
The little cottage is so cute! And love the car murals full of people!
