Fremont Canyon

We started the day off with a half day kayak adventure in the Fremont Canyon

The drive to the resort was beautiful!

The host staff at Alcova Resort http://www.alcovaresort.com/

loaded our kayak on a pontoon boat and dropped us off towards top of the canyon and we paddled back at our own pace.

The staff were super friendly and helpful - (thanks, guys!)

The weather was perfect- though the canyon was way more windy than we anticipated! The views were majestic !

A yummy birthday frozen hurricane awaited when we returned at the Marina. Woohoo - our arms are gonna feel it tomorrow!

As we were leaving the Alcova Lake Resort we came across a scenic overlook that offered 360 degree views of the entire Alcova Reservoir area.

Independence Rock

We thought it fitting to stop at Independence Rock as it was the most noted landmark and rest place for the wagon train travelers along the Oregon Trail.

The pictures don’t/ can’t give a true sense of the size of this solid granite rock - but the walk around it is ~1.3 miles! The wildflowers still in bloom made for a really pretty walk.

Pioneers of the late 1800s heading to California and Oregon used this distinct rock as a landmark to help mark the amount of journey left ( kind of like the original 4 way stop I used in my home town to help me navigate. :) )

Trailblazers traveling West had to reach the rock before July 4th to avoid deadly winter weather. Travelers on their way to California and Oregon would often inscribe their name. Thus the rock was at one time dubbed, “The Register of the Desert.” Rusty and I enjoyed the hike around the stone and had fun searching for inscriptions - here's a few:
