Newport, Rhode Island

Rusty had a job in Newport - so I tagged along and we added a few days so we could explore. Our first night there we were walking to dinner and happened by the church the JFK and Jackie Kennedy got married in!

Cliff Walk

Rusty was up and out early to get his project done. We really enjoyed the place we stayed -at the Town and Tide Inn ( https://www.townandtideinn.com). The Innkeeper was super helpful for logistics, the location was ideal, our room was spotless and comfy , and we enjoyed wonderful breakfast dishes each morning in the lovely garden area.

The Inn was in walking distance to the Memorial Boulevard/ Easton Beach entrance to the Cliff Walk http://www.cliffwalk.com

. The path is a 7 mile round trip ( out and back) trek through rocky coastline and the backyards of several Newport Mansions and the Salve Regina University. A large part of the path is paved. At the end of the path - there are places where you need to scramble and hop rocks as well as a very dark tunnel to pass through - but the view is totally worth it! I was able to complete the whole path even the rougher portion by just really, really taking my time. There is a portion of the beach where there are many rock balancing statues left by passers thru. The coastal views along this path were breathtaking and the mansions were the definition of "over the top"!

Brenton Point State Park

Brenton Point State Park ( https://riparks.com/parks/brenton.php) was a great place to have a picnic dinner and catch the sunset.

Beavertail Lighthouse Museum

A quick drive took us to Jamestown, RI to play in the rocks at the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum. https://www.beavertaillight.org/

Purgatory Chasm

It is a short walk to get to the chasm from the small parking lot. The chasm is a glacial cleft about 10 feet wide and about 50 feet deep that is continuously being filled with seawater. From the parking area follow the main path a few hundred feet to a foot bridge. The bridge is interesting to see - covered with "love locks" left by romantic tourists. There are some off-shoot paths that very quickly lead to cliff tops that offer incredible views of the ocean and a nearby beach from 150 FT high cliff.

White Horse Tavern

We celebrated Rusty's birthday at the White Horse Tavern- America's oldest operating restaurant, having served guests since 1673. We had such a nice meal- the dining room had just a few tables - all nicely distanced from each other. Rusty had the Beef Wellington which has been on their menu for over 50 years! https://whitehorsenewport.com/

Chapel of the Sea

"They that go down to The Sea in ships, and occupy their business in great waters; These men see the works of The Lord and His wonders in the deep. For He maketh the storms to cease so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they are at rest, and so he bringeth them unto their desired heaven." These words are inscribed along the border of the ceiling in this little Chapel in the Seamen's Church Institute in Bowen's Warf. https://seamensnewport.org/chapel-of-the-sea/

The Chapel was painted by Durr Freedley, a well-respected artist living in Newport in the early 1900’s, the chapel is a visual homage to Christian saints associated with the sea. The mural presents the stories of saints mariners prayed to for strength and support.

The chapel is a lovely piece of calm amid the frenzy of the Wharf.
