We take a trip to Garrett County, Maryland at least once a year to enjoy some winter scenery and snow.
Swallow Falls State Park is a favorite- especially the Canyon Trail - offering a beautiful trail with 4 waterfalls in the short 1.5 mile hike. https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/western/swallowfalls.aspx
Tolliver Falls, Swallow Falls ( Upper and Lower) and Muddy Creek Falls. The trail is stunning with rocky gorges and great views of the Youghiogheny River. We were treated to fresh snow from the night before. It was a brisk, sunny day and the views were breathtaking!
Herrington Manor State Park
A few minutes drive from Swallow Falls is Herrington Manor State Park - surrounded by Garrett State Forest and home to a 53 acre lake ( Lake Herrington).
This is a really nice park. The cross country ski/ hiking trails were freshly groomed. We did a 4 mile loop with a combination of the blue/ red and green trails. This was much prettier and interesting than we first anticipated when we saw the large, bleak frozen lake. there is a 5.5 mile trail that connects Herrington to Swallow Falls - something to look forward to next time- maybe Spring! There are nicely spaced out cabins for rent and they have great trails for both hiking and cross country skiing.
We stayed at The Butterfly Suite at Enchanted Table Meadow in Accident Maryland. The Suite was very cool - the owner/ host Ken recently built the property on what was once a 60 acre strawberry farm. He is one of nine kids and their father left some land to each of them. Ken incorporated stone and barn boards from the farm into the suite. Provided the perfect amount of privacy and scenery. We would recommend to anyone looking to spend time in this area ( Wisp/ Deep Creek) as it was one of our favorite lodgings.
